The tète à tète between Cameroon’s Minister of Communication and Government Spokesperson, Issa Tchiroma Bakery and the US diplomat lasted for 87 minutes. The length of their discussions only lends credence to the density and importance of the issues both men discussed. The audience did not only provide the perfect occasion for both personalities to review bilateral ties between Yaounde and Washington DC, but also presented an opportunity for them to exchange on topical national and international issues.

At the end of the audience with the Minister of Communication, the US Ambassador did not keep the content of his exchanges a secret. The upcoming presidential election billed for October 7 was priority during their meeting. In this regard, the US diplomat stressed that his country “has no preferred candidate.” The desire of the United States, the ambassador reiterated, is that the electoral process is “free, fair and credible.”

Another major issue that featured prominently in the discussion was the video depicting abuses purportedly committed by some Cameroon soldiers that recently went viral on social media. In this regard, Ambassador Peter Henry Barlerin praised the efforts of the Cameroonian government which, through the various media outings of the Minister of Communication, Issa Tchiroma Bakery, have shed more light on these abusive acts.

“I congratulated the minister on his statements and we had convergent views that the extra-judicial killings are terrible and that the culprits will be judged and sanctioned according to the law,” the US diplomat said.

On the socio-political impasse in the North-West and South-West Regions, His Excellency Barlerin expressed the concern of his government over the violence still ongoing on the ground in the restive South West and North Regions. The United States through its Ambassador to Yaounde, vehemently condemns these acts of violence perpetrated on the ground and called for dialogue as soon as possible. He stated that the wish of the United States is that the unity and stability of Cameroon be preserved.

It should be noted that the US Ambassador to Cameroon came under serious criticism recently after he issued a communique following his audience with the Head of State. The communique was in bad taste as it portrayed US interference in the internal affairs of the country especially on the leadership of the country. Cameroonians across the board condemned such interference even as the US diplomat apologized stating that he was misquoted by the media. The internal affairs of Cameroon such as the election of its president remains a sole prerogative of Cameroonians who choses their president in a free, fair and transparent election.
