The President of the Republic has expressed his deep concern about an accident which left 31 people dead on the Yaoundé-Bafoussam highway.
On Friday July 6 th 2018, at about 4am in the morning, a ghastly motto accident occurred on the Yaounde-Bafoussam highway precisely in a locality called Batourou I in the Ndikinimiki Sub Division of the Mbam and Inoubou Division of the Center region. A 70 sitter bus that left Yaounde and was heading to Bafoussam suddenly missed its tract on a bridge, tumbled and crushed itself at the base of the bridge. The dreaded incident left 31 persons dead with several others injured. Preliminary investigations carried out by the Ministry of transport and gendarmes revealed several factors caused the accident: the driver is not a holder of a driven license, he was tired and deep asleep when the accident occurred, the travel agency that owns the bus is not a holder of a second category license that authorize agencies to deal in inter-urban transport and he was just a car conductor of the travel agency involve in the clandestine transportation. The bus was overloaded and had worn-out tires
The news of this tragic accident could not leave the Head of State indifferent. The President of the Republic expressed his deep concern to the bereaved families and wish a quick recovery to wounded victims. In very firm words, he has instructed the Ministry of Transport to access the situation and met out appropriate punishment to those responsible. He insisted that liability should be clearly established and all moral and physical persons responsible for the outcome of the tragic accident be immediately sanctioned according to the law in place. The transport ministry has suspended the license of the travel agency and that of the center that issued the cars road worthiness certificate.
The Head of State further instructed the competent authorities to intensify road safety campaigns and to absolutely repress any crime, felony or misdemeanor related to road traffic that is been noticed on the highway throughout the national territory. He called on transporters to vigilant, to respect security measures and to ensure the maintenance of their vehicles likewise the observation of road traffic and general road safety rules on the different roads.
