The aim of the 16th edition of the campaign “Holidays without AIDS”, launched in Douala on August 6, 2018 by the Secretary General to the  governor’s  office, Thierry Ki-Nou Nana, is to raise the awareness of 60,000 young people in the Littoral region, 35,000 women and 25,000 men. To achieve this goal, the Smartphone was put to use through the theme selected: “Android generation, click on HIV testing.” In terms of coordination of the Littoral Region, 75 peer educators and supervisors were trained for several days in terms of awareness and education.

Moreover, points have already been identified in the 6 districts of the Wouri division. For the coordinator, Dr. Victorine Noëlle Yongui Ntamack, targeted youth need to be sensitized and know their HIV status. “When the result is positive, the peer educators are equipped to be able to direct the positive screened persons towards the structures of assumption of responsibility. If not, youth are encouraged to behave responsibly.” Dr. Yongui also explained that a study was recently carried out which portrays a decline in seroprevalence rate nationwide from 4.3% to 3.4%. However, among young people aged 15 to 24, the prevalence rate remains high. On 10 screens, there are 6 infections, and girls are the most vulnerable.

Hence this exhortation to abstinence, faithfulness to one partner, responsible behavior and the use of condoms. In her address, Marianne Stella Kedis, peer educator representative in Eriken, pledged, on behalf of her colleagues, to keep young people awake in the face of danger, to raise awareness, to promote life together, use social networks to educate and get young people to know their HIV status.

The Secretary General to the governor’s office has meanwhile said that the action of the first lady is a call to combine efforts to block the path to HIV and support young people for good results. He also noted that this campaign is a moment of great mobilization through football tournaments, summer camps.

This 16th edition of the free AIDS holiday campaign was launched today August 1 2018 at the esplanade of the African Synergy  against HIV/AIDS and sufferings by the Minister of Public Health Andre Mama Fouda who doubles as President for the National AIDS Control Committee  and the Minister of Youth Affairs and Civic Education Mounouna Foutso. The ceremony that has been placed under the same theme used in 2016 ‘Android Generation click on HIV screening’, rallied a cross section of the youth who henceforth have a month mission to sensitize their peers through door to door campaign, creating awareness, increasing change in behavioural pattern and impacting them with the vital knowledge to protect themselves against the disease.
