President Biya Encourages Volley Ball Lionesses

On instructions of the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, Head of Government on May 15 in Yaounde decorated the 22 volley ball lionesses and the technical staff with medals of the Knight of the National Order of Valour.

Yes they fought and conquered on behalf of the fatherland. For the first time, the National Volley Ball selection brought glory to the nation by winning the 2017 African Female Volley Ball Championship that took place in Yaounde. They braved all odds evening beating 8-time African champions, Kenya to lift the continental trophy after fails attempts in 1999 and 2000.

Thus, in his usual way to appreciate victory and hard work, President Paul Biya, as he has done with other sports men and women who have brought glory to the fatherland, instructed that the Volley Ball Lionesses should be decorated with the Knight of the Order of Valour medals.

The Prime Minister, Head of Government, Philemon Yang proceeded to decorate the heroines and their technical bench in a ceremony at the Star Building on May 15, 2018. The ceremony attended by the Minister of Sports and Physical Education amid other members of government and high ranking State personalities was pregnant of symbolism. First, it was the first time the team is winning a continental title thus, their first ever State recognition. Secondly the event coincides with activities marking the National Day of Cameroon. A day that Cameroonians from all walks of life, from north, south, east and west, are celebrating unity and national integration despite the diversity in cultures and opinions.

Addressing the Female African Volley Ball Champions, the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Philemon Yang, expressed the satisfaction of the Head of State and the First Lady, Mrs Chantal Biya, the admiration of the entire government and the people of Cameroon for their brilliant victory recorded at the October 2017 Female African Volley Ball Championship.

Sports and Physical Education, Bidoung Mpkatt attributed the victory to discipline and team spirit that reigns in the squad. He said the victory is for all Cameroonians irrespective of linguistic background. It is not Anglophone or Francophones but Cameroonians as w whole who are celebrating the victorious exploits of the national female volley ball team. Coming at a period when unity and national integration as well as living together is being celebrated, the member of government rejoiced that sports is one of the unifying factors for Cameroonians.

The captain of the Female National Volley Ball team, Christelle Nana could not hide her emotions and gratitude to the Presidential couple, Paul and Chantal Biya for their constant support to sports men and women of the country.

It should be noted that the Head of State and wife, received the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon at the Unity Palace after they lifted the continental football trophy in Gabon in February 2017. They players and the technical bench were all decorated with State distinctions. Few months later, President Paul Biya again on August 10, 2017, received all sports men and women who won medals in 2017 at the State House. During the ceremony, the Head of State decorated them with medals and in his speech declared that Cameroon will be ready to host the 2019 African Cup of Nations.
